John McCain Endorses Proposition 104, The Arizona Civil Rights Initiative

7/27/2008 - In an ABC interview with George Stephanopoulos John McCain announced that he supports the Arizona Civil Rights Initiative (AzCRI).

STEPHANOPOULOS: "Opponents of affirmative action are trying to get a referendum on the ballot here that would do away with affirmative action. Do you support that?"

MCCAIN: "Yes, I do. I do not believe in quotas. But I have not seen the details of some of the proposals. But I've always opposed quotas."

STEPHANOPOULOS: "But the one here in Arizona you support?"

McCAIN: "I support it, yes."

Andrew Thomas, Chairman of AzCRI stated, “We applaud Senator John McCain for his principled support of the Arizona Civil Rights Initiative. Equal treatment for all Americans is the cornerstone - socially, economically, politically and in a civic sense - for uniting our nation and enabling us to compete successfully with other nations. Senator McCain understands this fact."

Thomas continued, “Senator McCain now joins the over 334,000 citizens of Arizona who signed petitions affirming their desire for a state where equal treatment is the abiding principle and preferences based on race, sex, color, ethnicity and national origin play no role in how citizens will be treated by their government."

The Arizona Civil Rights Initiative is dedicated to giving the people of Arizona the opportunity to end preferential treatment based on race, sex, ethnicity or national origin by state or local governments. AzCRI will make Arizona a place of equal opportunity for all, not a state that uses discrimination as a tool to create “diversity.” Achieving “diversity” should never be an excuse to discriminate.
